There are more than 37,000 species of spiders found around the world. Others, such as the black widow and brown recluse, are considered deadly. Some species are commonly heard of, including the jumping spider, tarantula, and orb weaver.

When the temperatures drop, wolf spiders look for warm places to live. They’ll enter your home through gaps in the windows and doors and holes in screens. They can squeeze through crevices in your home’s foundation and siding. This group contains approximately 240 species in twenty-one genera in the United States.

Their name comes from the Ancient Greek word λύκος, meaning “wolf”. They are known for their aversion to peppermint, lavender, and citrus oils. So all you have to do is add some drops around your house, in places like basements, and the attic where these spiders like to nest. Wolf spiders in California do not come into the home intentionally. As the summer turns to autumn and the temperatures cool, they look for a place to hide and a mate, which means they may find a crack and get into your home. Treat the bite with warm soap and water, covering it with a bandage to reduce the risk of infection.

The carapace is a dark brown with scattered gray hairs that are typically not arranged in any discernible pattern. The abdomen is similarly colored, with a somewhat darker dorsal stripe. If you see a spider in your bed, it’s more likely to be a simple house spider or, worse, a brown recluse. Be very careful about removing it if you’re not entirely sure of the identity; brown recluse bites are poisonous and may cause serious localized tissue death.

Other wolf spider species may inhabit alpine meadows, coastal forests, dry shrub lands and woodlands. Most species are burrowers that live underground, although some specimens can be seen traveling above ground in leaf litter, on lawns and in gardens. Most wolf spiders are also nocturnal, although some do hunt in the morning. A wolf spider’s diet typically consists of insects and other small spiders.
